Pasta La Vista!

When thinking about where your next meal comes from, always remember, math is everywhere. Pasta comes in all shapes and sizes. We were fascinated with its ability to take in water, and form. Therefore, we decided to make our own pasta. For each shape, we had to take different things into consideration: Penne is similar to a hollow cylinder, Macaroni is a curved cylinder, the shell is formed from the base of a sphere, and the farfalle is based on the idea of sinusoidal waves.

If you look at each corner you will find a little treat, but don’t bite. To create our graphs, we used Mathematica, a Wolfram Technology, specifically the ParametricPlot3D command. With this, we were able to not only experiment with different equations, but create boundaries for the graphs to end with in order to form more intricate details. If you look a little closer, you will find some pasta puns, but we leave you with this one; Why don’t raviolis ever get invited to hang out? Because they are a little square.
