My Neighbour Totoro

For this project, we investigated how we perceive the shapes around us and how mathematics helps us define them further. We made a 3D model of the studio ghibli character Totoro using the Mathematica function of ellipsoids. We also made his umbrella.

Totoro looks friendly and affectionate which causes us to associate him with comfort and safety. Different shapes can be used to represent different traits. The psychology of shapes allows the designers to make these different choices. Triangles in logos or app designs can represent balance or stability. Characters who have sharper jawlines or other features can be considered harsher or unapproachable. Circles represent community and eternity. We noticed that friendly characters like Mommin, Snorlax, and Baymax, tended to have rounder designs. The Olympics logo of the five interconnected circles symbolize togetherness and the growing global community that the competition encourages. Design is very important as it can elicit an immediate emotional response from an audience and set up a baseline of expectations.
