Professor of Mathematics, Bryn Mawr College
We thought of a few ideas when discussing this project. Sam had the idea to make a charcuterie board in mathematica. Lia had a Bryn Mawr charcuterie board so we thought we could create that in Mathematica with some food … Continue reading “Charcuterie Board in Mathematica” →
There are so many types of hats that come in all different shapes and sizes. Just glancing at them, you’ll notice that they take on 3D shapes that can be formed with multivariable calculus equations. As hat wearers ourselves, we … Continue reading “Hats off to Multivariable Calculus!” →
Using Mathematica, we created a 3D representation of a soccer field including goals and a ball with our understanding of planes and spherical coordinates. The idea for our project came from Virginia running an intramural soccer club on campus and … Continue reading “Let’s Play Soccer!” →
I chose to model a playground because I grew up loving playgrounds and all the unique structures you could find in them. Playgrounds are made up of lots of cool shapes applicable to multivariable calculus. The slide, for example, is … Continue reading “Playing Around in the Multivariable Playground” →
We decided to use Mathematica to model an iconic dress because both of us are interested in fashion, and wanted to try to apply concepts of calculus to the field. While doing research, we saw a lot of similar shapes … Continue reading “Recreating a Chanel Haute Couture Dress Using Mathematica” →
The Zhao sisters, eager to celebrate the festive spirit of Christmas, transformed their backyard into a winter “wonderland”. When the rest of their families were away, they built a snowman, brought back a tree from Trader Joe’s with a twinkling … Continue reading “Family Backyard” →
Vector analysis, also known as vector calculus, is an advanced branch of mathematics that expands calculus concepts to multiple dimensions. It deals with vector fields and their derivatives and integrals and is closely connected with multivariable calculus. Key concepts of … Continue reading “Josiah W. Gibbs and Vector Analysis” →
For my poster, I created a model in Mathematica of a flower I crocheted. I liked the idea of recreating this specific project because I originally designed the pattern to use simple shapes I knew how to crochet without a … Continue reading “Crochet Flower in Mathematica” →
We were interested in showing the beauty of everyday life with math. Sometimes it is hard to make connections between what we learn in class and the outside world. By using math to make flowers and a vase, we were … Continue reading “Building a Bouquet: A Multivariable Approach” →
For my project I used the Grapics3D function to model Garfield in Mathematica. I started with the head and body which are both ellipsoids, and I then labeled them as fig1 and fig2 respectively. This allowed me to plug the … Continue reading “Modeling Garfield with Multivariable Calculus!” →
