Just How Outrageously Underfilled are Haribo Gummy Bear Packages?

Our project examines how underfilled gummy bear packages are by calculating the maximum capacity by volume of each gummy bear package and comparing it with the actual fill. We obtained the volume of the gummy bear packaging by filling it up with water and measure the water volume, and that of each gummy bear by mathematical modeling. We found that a Party Size Haribo gummy bear package was only 56% filled.

We simplified the shape of the gummy bear so that it can be modeled by three-dimensional sine curves, but not so much that the gummy bear becomes unrecognizable. We cut each gummy into two blocks: the top block containing the bear’s feet and ears, and the bottom block containing the back of the bear’s body.
